Tsuneishi brings methanol to diesel engines on Kamsarmax bulker
In Japan, Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyo Bay has delivered its first proprietary system for supplying methanol to medium- and low-speed diesel main engines for installation aboard a Kamsarmax bulk carrier.
The low-flashpoint fuel supply system, or LFSS, will connect the vessel’s methanol fuel supply with its main engine, bringing an alternative to heavy fuel oil into the diesel-engine machinery used to propel the ship. The Kamsarmax installation will be the first use of Tsuneishi’s system aboard an actual vessel.
Methanol has a lower flashpoint than conventional marine fuel oil, requiring a dedicated system to deliver it to the engine. Tsuneishi developed the equipment specifically for medium- and low-speed diesel engines as shipping begins shifting toward methanol and other alternative fuels.
ClassNK granted approval in principle for the proprietary design in April 2024. Tsuneishi will support commissioning and testing before the system enters service.
