The Little Apple: NYC museum hosts city model two decades in the making

March 30, 2026 |

In New York, a painstakingly detailed wood model of New York City, constructed by truck driver turned artist Joe Macken, is being displayed at the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibit, titled He Built This City: Joe Macken’s Model, took Macken over two decades to construct and is a whopping 50 by 27 feet in scale. Macken used balsa wood, cardboard and glue.

And while the streets and blocks are accurate, small details are added based on Macken’s own memories—thus making the model a “mix of history and personal memory… a map and a story,” according to a write up in design boom.
