SWITCH and Incat Crowther advance hydrogen ferry for New York Harbor
In Australia, Incat Crowther announced detailed design and regulatory approvals are underway in partnership with zero-emission vessel developer SWITCH Maritime for a 28 meter hydrogen fuel cell electric fast ferry intended for deployment in New York Harbor.
The 150 passenger vessel, known as the ZEF-150, is designed to cruise at 25 knots and carry 720 kilograms of compressed hydrogen, enabling a full day of service across New York ferry routes. The hydrogen fuel cell electric propulsion and storage systems are intended to match diesel vessel service speeds and daily bunkering schedules without requiring shoreside charging infrastructure or grid upgrades.
The project is supported by a $2 million grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. It builds on SWITCH and Incat Crowther’s prior collaboration on Sea Change, a hydrogen fuel cell powered electric-drive high speed passenger ferry operating in the California Bay Area.
