Shanghai carries out record 8,000-ton green methanol operation for ships

August 23, 2026 |

In Argentina, Data Portuaria reported that Shanghai Electric Group loaded 8,000 tons of green methanol at Yangshan Port, setting a new world record. Since April 2024, the Port of Shanghai has supplied a cumulative 36,000 tons. Green methanol, produced from biomass and renewable energy, is key to reducing carbon emissions in maritime transport.

Shanghai Electric Group loaded 8,000 tons of green methanol onto a container ship at Yangshan Port in Shanghai, setting a world record for the largest single green methanol bunkering operation, according to the report.

Zhu Zhaokai, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, stated that the bunkering operation marked the establishment in China of an integrated industrial chain covering large-scale green methanol production, onshore and offshore storage and transportation, port bunkering, and its final use in ships.

“This industrial model offers a replicable and scalable Chinese solution for the green and low-carbon transformation of international maritime transport,” the executive added.
