Europe waste to energy market set to nearly triple to $67.8 billion by 2033, research finds

August 23, 2026 |

In India, Epignosis Insights reported that the Europe waste to energy market, valued at $23.6 billion in 2025, is projected to reach $67.8 billion by 2033, driven by tightening EU environmental policy, rising landfill costs, and growing demand for combined electricity and heat recovery.

According to the report, waste processed across the region’s energy recovery facilities is expected to rise from approximately 112.5 million tons in 2025 to 211.9 million tons by 2033, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 8.5 percent between 2027 and 2033.

The report attributes much of this growth to tightening EU decarbonization requirements. The European Union reduced net greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 percent in 2024, while the EU Emissions Trading System has already driven emissions from electricity, heat generation and industrial manufacturing 50 percent below 2005 levels.
