Scentra repurposes rosemary waste for essential oils packaging
In Macau, design Zhixi Dai has created an eco-friendly packaging made out of compressed rosemary trimmings and seaweed-based extract as a natural binder. Dubbed Scentra, the rosemary waste is sourced from an organic farm in Guizhou, China, operated under Omni Biotech’s AOLUX line. It is used to package Aolux essential oils.
In addition to cushioning the product, the rosemary retains its natural aroma, allowing the packaging to be reused as a passive diffuser after the bottle is removed. Additional essential oil can be added to refresh the scent. “No batteries, no wiring, no porcelain filter to keep clean. Just plant matter doing what plant matter does,” according to a write-up in the design publication Yanko Design. Scentra recently won the Best Eco Design win at the European Product Design Awards.
