San Francisco to host 5-acre biodegradable portrait

October 12, 2026 |

In San Francisco, Saype, an artist known for creating massive, biodegradable land art will make the Great Lawn at the city’s Yerba Buena Center of the Arts the next installment of his “Beyond Walls” series. The image of intertwined hands will cover the 5.5 acre space. Because Saype uses biodegradable natural pigments primarily made of charcoal and chalk, the image will fade over time due to foot traffic, wind, and grass growth.

The artist’s website says the work “is meant to convey that humanity is stronger when people reach across the divisions that separate them—whether those divisions are national borders, race, ethnicity, social class, culture or ideology.”

The San Francisco installment will be the 23rd location for the work. Previous sites include Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, a floating barge on Venice’s Grand Canal, and the Champ de Mars in front of Paris’ Eiffel Tower.
