Reel Deal: Wildtype launches Kickstarter for cultivated salmon lox
The campaign, which went live on June 30, has raised more than $62,000 toward a $75,000 goal with several weeks remaining. It marks a shift for the company, which has primarily focused on restaurant distribution.
Wildtype received U.S. regulatory clearance last year for its cultivated coho salmon, becoming the first company authorized to sell cultivated seafood in the country. Its salmon has since appeared on menus at restaurants such as Kann in Portland and Robin in San Francisco.
The Kickstarter includes two product lines: ready-to-eat cultivated salmon lox and a skincare range built around what the company calls Marine Cellular Complex, a mixture of proteins, peptides, and other cell-derived compounds including salmon-based collagen and growth factors.
“For nine years, we’ve been quietly building something that didn’t seem possible: real salmon, grown from a single cell – without a net, a farm, or the open ocean,” the company states on its campaign page.
