POET supplies bioethanol for first U.S. marine bunkering
In the United States, POET supplied the fuel for the first U.S. based bunkering of a vessel with 100% bioethanol at the Port of Houston in an operation with global maritime shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk.
The operation builds on Maersk’s previous testing of bioethanol in its dual fuel fleet. Kirby Corporation supported fuel transportation and bunkering, the Port of Houston provided port coordination and infrastructure, and the U.S. Coast Guard supported regulatory requirements.
Maersk Vice President of Energy Markets Emma Mazhari called the operation an “important step in exploring how bioethanol can be incorporated” into U.S. marine fuel supply chains.
“Seeing American-made bioethanol move from the farm to a container ship in one of the nation’s largest ports is an exciting moment for our industry,” said Jeff Broin, Founder and CEO of POET, the world’s largest bioethanol producer.
