NYK plans hydrogen fuel cell cruise ship for Tokyo
In Japan, Ship & Bunker reports NYK, Yanmar Power Solutions and ENEOS will equip a new Tokyo dining cruise ship with a hydrogen fuel cell system before it enters service in 2027.
The vessel will replace Lady Crystal, which operates from Tennoz Isle. Yanmar will design the fuel cell system, while Toyota Motor Corporation will supply the hydrogen storage modules.
NYK said it has completed safety and reliability assessments under Japanese government guidelines for hydrogen-powered vessels. ENEOS will produce and supply the ship’s hydrogen through refueling stations in Tokyo.
The project will give the companies a commercial test of hydrogen propulsion in passenger service, where fuel storage, refueling and vessel safety must work together. NYK said the system is intended to expand hydrogen use in maritime transport and reduce shipping emissions.
