Hydrogen shipping firm Future Proof files for bankruptcy

June 17, 2026 |

In the Netherlands, Ship & Bunker reports hydrogen-powered inland shipping company Future Proof Shipping has filed for bankruptcy despite operating three zero-emission container vessels.

The Rotterdam-based company entered bankruptcy proceedings on June 2, with the case transferred to the Central Netherlands Court the following day, according to the Dutch Central Insolvency Register.

Future Proof Shipping had positioned itself as an early mover in hydrogen-powered inland transport. In 2021, it announced plans to convert the container barge Maas, later renamed H2 Barge 1, to run on hydrogen and signed a long-term hydrogen supply agreement with Air Liquide that December.

The company later expanded to a fleet of three inland container ships running on hydrogen. The bankruptcy filing leaves the future of those vessels and the company’s hydrogen shipping operations uncertain.
