In Massachusetts, you can now order a saliva based test from Good Start Genetics to find out if you or your spouse have a genetic mutation that can be passed onto your children that causes cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy, two of the most common genetic disorders today. The $149 test can be ordered on Amazon, a first for genetic testing companies which often sell genetic testing only through physicians. Good Start Genetics hopes that by making this test easily accessible to couples looking to start a family, more of them will be better prepared if they do have a baby with cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy. As part of the package, which tests for 591 cystic fibrosis variants versus 28 by some competitors, couples can get connected with genetic counselors and have questions ready for their physician so they are better prepared for their journey ahead.
