In the Netherlands, Dutch Design Week featured several biobased innovations.

The Material Sense LAB in Eindhoven showcased coins made from the bioplastic polylactic acid. “We want to leave behind as little waste as possible,” says founder Simone de Waart. The coins were used successfully during the Gebouw-T festival. The MSLAB also exhibited Xyhlo bio-finish, a black paint made out of the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. Three buildings in the Netherlands have already been painted with Xyhlo bio-finish.

A team of students from University of Edinburgh presented a potential scenario in which “biohackers” combat microbial surveillance technology put in place by a hypothetical, future government.

The annual Eindhoven event has increasingly featured “biodesign” due to advances in synthetic biology and the push to develop more sustainable materials.
