In the United Kingdom, ethical food brand Rhythm 108 and packaging firm Parkside have developed a fully compostable food packaging material made from Brazilian ecalyptus.

Dubbed NatureFlex biofilm, the triple-layer packaging is made of wood pulp from sustainably sourced eucalytups plantations together with a biopolymer sealant. The material has “excellent moisture and oxygen barrier” that extends product shelf life, according to the companies.

NatureFlex is currently being used to make bags for Rhythym’s Ooh-la-la tea biscuits, available in lemon ginger chia, almond biscotti, coconut cookie and double-chocolate hazelnut varieties. The material took Parkside four years to develop.
