In Vermont, 3D printing firm A1Filament has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund production of its filament range made from biobased composites.

After solving technological issues that caused the filaments to become jammed during 3D printing, the company is looking to raise $465,000. It also pledges to produce filament without emitting any pollutants, including carbon. The materials include biobased polylactic acid and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

“We believe in the industry and we believe that, just like people weren’t accepting of defective phones and dropped calls, they won’t tolerate ‘bad’ filament for much longer either,” according to the Kickstarter page. “We believe that our unrelenting and ongoing commitment to find and produce the best plastic filaments available will meet with the most important approval of all—yours.”

The filaments are certified as compostable and come in 16 different colors and sizes of 1.75mm and 3.0mm. The company says it has, for the last four years, been operating in a 90,000 square-foot warehouse provided rent-free by an unnamed government agency. The location was also not specified.

Those who pledge $1,000 will receive 24 rolls of filament.
