In the Netherlands, biobased chemicals company Avantium has announced an expanded partnership with SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited to pilot the production of polylactic-co-glycolic acid as a polyester alternative.

Using Avantium’s Volta Technology, which converts CO2 into high-value products such as glycolic acid, the partnership aims to produce PLGA using existing manufacturing assets. PLGA is recognized for its biodegradability, recyclability, and superior mechanical properties, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-based polyesters.

Over the past year, Avantium and SCGC have focused on optimizing PLGA’s formulation for large-scale applications, emphasizing its barrier properties and environmental impact. Under the new agreement, SCGC will support all stages of technology development and collaborate with Avantium to explore various PLGA applications, with the goal of bringing these sustainable solutions to market. Avantium has also granted SCGC the option to negotiate a licensing deal for the use of its Volta Technology in Southeast Asia, which is expected to accelerate the adoption of these innovative technologies in the region.
