In Virginia, researchers studied people in Sweden who were alcoholics and divorced to see if they could find a correlation. They were trying to see if alcoholism led to divorce or divorce led to alcoholism, but what they found was that one didn’t necessarily cause the other and that part of it could be your genetic makeup. Surprisingly, they found that genetics accounted for about 50 percent of the alcoholism and divorce association.

How will this help people going through alcoholism and divorce, other than laying blame on genetics? It actually is very beneficial research as doctors and mental health practitioners can now treat patients more effectively knowing their genetic makeup makes them more inclined to handle stress or certain triggers in a certain way. Instead of treating them for alcoholism or divorce as the source, they can treat patients for how they handle stress, for example.
