In Nigeria, soccer star William Troost-Ekong sported biobased  cleats in the opening game of the Africa Cup of Nations. Made by the United Kingdom’s Sokito, the match against Equatorial Guinea was the first time vegan cleats made from corn waste, sugarcane and bamboo have been worn in international competition.

Dubbed Scudetta, the cleats will be more widely available by summer. The lining and tongue of the cleat are made from corn waste, and the sole plate is made from castor beans. The insole is manufactured from sugarcane and bamboo. Tencel fibers made from wood are also used for a knit collar.

“I enjoyed being part of the boot development process and I love the vibrant design and connection to nature—a great tribute to Nigeria,” said Troost-Ekong, who has invested in Sokito.
