In the Netherlands, cultivated meat leader Meatable has opened a new pilot facility to scale cultivated pork. The 3,300m2 facility at Leiden’s Bio Science Park will allow the company to increase bioreactor capacity from 50 to 200 L. The site will also support further capacity expansion to to 500 L reactors.
The new Leiden facility follows Meatable’s $35 million Series B funding in the summer and “marks an important step towards commercializing its cultivated pork products.” The location ensures proximity to expert knowledge and state-of-the-art facilities that will help Meatable expand its development capacity in preparation for its commercial launch in Singapore in 2024.
In July, the Netherlands became the first EU member state to green light cultivated meat tastings. More regulatory developments are expected in 2024.
