In Italy, researchers at University of Trento, with funding from the Save the Chickens Foundation, are developing a process to turn chicken feathers into chicken meat.

The project, which is being spearheaded by professors Luciano Conti and Stefano Maria Biressi, has so far determined the type of feathers and best conditions for growing cells, according to vegconomist.  “The cells that we manage to extract from the feathers grow well and so far we have managed to expand them for a few months, obtaining tens of millions of cells from a few cells,” according to Save the Chickens Foundation.

Vegconomist points out that the concept was first suggested by Eat Just in 2017. The cultivated meat pioneer posted a YouTube video in which company scientists ate meat from a chicken named Ian, while Ian was clucking around the room.
