In Israel, cultivated chicken produced by SuperMeat has been granted kosher status by Orthodox Union Kosher, marking the first such certification for lab-grown meat.

Jewish law forbids consuming any part of a living animal, and lab-grown meat is derived from the stem cells of living animals.  However, SuperMeat’s poultry uses stem cells from eggs, which could mark a path forward for other lab-grown poultries to achieve kosher certification.

The Times of Israel says the certification came after SuperMeat hosted two rabbinic delegations to discuss Jewish law and the company’s technology. “Aligning our technology with kosher dietary laws holds immense significance for us. This step represents our commitment to inclusivity and respect for diverse dietary needs, making our cultivated chicken meat accessible to audiences around the world,” said Ido Savir, CEO of SuperMeat.
