In Germany, Modern Meadow and BASF have partnered to develop an animal-free material that looks, feels and naturally ages like traditional leather, suede, or chamois.

The material, known as Bio-VERA™, has been engineered by Modern Meadow and incorporates BASF’s Ultramid® Ccycled® solution using post-consumer waste and bio-renewable technologies.  The resulting material offers luxurious aesthetics and “exceptional” performance capabilities.

The alliance also opens doors for the development of high-performing and highly sustainable biomaterials that have the potential to transform various industries, including fashion, automotive, and consumer goods. “We have a unique opportunity to create a material that not only meets the demands of the modern world but also helps protect our environment using traceable plant-based and recycled feedstock to avoid animal and virgin petrochemical inputs and that at the beginning of the material development as a drop-in solution,” Catherine Roggero-Lovisi, CEO of Modern Meadow, says in a press statement.
