In New Zealand and the Netherlands, dairy coop Fonterra and nutrition and health company DSM have partnered to commercialize dairy proteins produced using precision fermentation.
The two companies, which began collaborating on the concept in 2021, will launch a startup to commercialize the resulting technology.
Komal Mistry-Mehta, chief innovation and brand officer at Fonterra, tells NutritionInsight the yet-unnamed start-up is an “exciting opportunity” to combine DSM’s expertise in precision fermentation science and technology with Fonterra’s dairy science and technology. “With fermentation-produced proteins having a wide array of potential applications for customers and consumers, this partnership aligns well with the co-op’s strategy to be a leader in dairy innovation and science,” says Mistry-Mehta.
