In Pennsylvania, food giant Kraft Heinz is developing prototype ketchup bottles made of paper in collaboration with Pulpex, the company behind Johnny Walker’s paper-based whiskey pilot in early 2021. The paper bottles will be recyclable and made from sustainably sourced wood pulp.

“Packaging waste is an industrywide challenge that we must all do our part to address,” says Kraft Heinz CEO Miguel Patricio in a press statement. “That is why we are committed to taking steps to explore sustainable packaging solutions across our brands at Kraft Heinz, offering consumers more choices. This new HEINZ bottle is one example of how we are applying creativity and innovation to explore new ways to provide consumers with the products they know and love while also thinking sustainably.”

The next steps will include prototype testing to assess performance before trials with consumers before bringing the bottle to market.

Heinz has set a goal of making all packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
