In Switzerland, Delica AG has begun selling coffee capsules made from renewable polypropylene.

Produced by chemical giant SABIC, the PP pods can be used with Delica’s Delizio capsule coffee machines. The PP is produced using tall oil, a waste product of the pulp and paper industry. Renewable content is “at least” 65% and can be as high as 95%.

“A life cycle study conducted by Carbotech has shown that we can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of our Delizio capsules by replacing our former fossil-based main component with a renewable polypropylene material based on tall oil,” says Ralf van den Bragt, head of business unit coffee at Delica AG.  The capsules are available in Migros, Switzerland’s largest supermarket chain.
