In France, a Filipino entrepreneur was given the opportunity to pitch bamboo straws as part of the Startupper of the Year challenge.

Bambuhay Social Enterprise’s Mark Sultan Gersava and five other winners globally made their business case for funding.  Gersava was one of 50,000 entrepreneurs who entered the contest, which drew 292 entrants from the Philippines.

The straws are organic, biodegradable, and naturally antibiotic.

“This is the only bamboo straw in the Philippines that conducted a lot of scientific studies so it undergoes microbiological test and moisture test in order to ensure the safety of this product that it will not harm our health. The solution or treatment we are using here is 100-percent organic,” Gersava tells Panay News.  “In sipping this (bamboo straw), you are not just helping the environment but you are helping the farmers in the Philippines,” he added.
