In The Netherlands, FiberCore Europe built a biobased footbridge made from never before used ecologically sustainable composite materials in bridge construction, including basalt fibers from Ireland-based Mafic and a bio-based polyester resin, based on glycerine-derived glycol. The deck is cored with Baltek balsa supplied by Airex AG, a division of Swiss-based 3A Composites. The biobased bridge materials have a lifetime expectancy of at least 100 years and are said to be stronger and will not rot or corrode as compared to traditional bridge materials. The biobased bridge also had lower energy requirements during construction, lower maintenance requirements and a longer service life than usual bridge materials.
