In Bangladesh, a state-run company is set to begin manufacturing shopping bags from jute to help meet the country’s goals of discouraging the use of polythene bags.

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporations has developed a pilot project at Demra and hopes to produce 1.5 million jute bags per day by June. The company is expected to launch a promotional campaign at the Dhaka International Trade Fair.

Bangladesh’s government enacted the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act in 2010 to mandate the use of jute in packaging for several products and to replace the use of banned polythene bags. Despite the law, many shops and stores continue to use polythene.
