Hemp-based house is not blowing smoke about sustainability

In Israel, Tav Group has built an ecofriendly home using natural materials, including hempcrete—a composite made from hemp, lime, and water.

Located in a rural Israeli artists’ village, the home also includes passive solar and ventilation to reduce energy demands as well as external lime plaster to blend the building in with the rocky terrain. rainwater collection and graywater purification systems were added to reduce water use.

Hempcrete is fire-resistant and a lime coating conveyed antimicrobial and antifungal properties.  Concrete was used for structural purposes, however, as hempcrete is only suitable for insulation.
