In Turkey, two Izmir Institute of Technology students have won Honeywell’s UniSim Design Challenge by using the company’s software to demonstrate a process route to ethylene from algae.

Ozgun Deliismail and Okan Akin, under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Erol Seker, designed a production route for the ubiquitous commercial chemical from the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata. Their preliminary design shows lower carbon emissions via a hybrid anaerobic digestion and oxidative coupling. The two students also won the contest last year.

UniSim Design Suite allows engineers to create steady-state and dynamic models. It is used for plant design, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, operational improvement, business planning, and asset management around the world. This year’s competition drew 60 entrants from 25 countries.
