In Israel, flavors and fragrance major Frutarom says its push into natural ingredients, including those for the health, pigments, and cosmetics markets, is helping it stay on the cutting edge of consumer trends.

Speaking to FoodIngredientsFirst, Yoni Glickman, president of Natural Product Solutions at Frutarom, outlined the company’s four platforms—health ingredients, natural color pigments, food protection, and microalgae.

The company has traditionally been a supplier of natural botanical extracts, but has been using biotechnology where possible. In natural color pigments, the company is working with growers and research institutions to optimize the amount of actives from the plant.

In food protection products, such as natural antioxidants and antimicrobials, Glickman feels the company has “very strong technology advantages. The ability to replace synthetic antioxidants in many of the food matrixes hasn’t been possible up until now.” Frutarom solutions are enabling use in beverages and confectionary applications, for example. Microalgae, meanwhile, is an important platform for producing pigments and cosmetic ingredients, and the company is integrated from the algae farms all the way through to finished product formulations, Glickman says.

“Everybody wants to get away from synthetic ingredients and we have been spending the last couple of years looking at how we can really strengthen our footprint in this space,” he adds.
