In Canada, researchers analyzed the genomes from more than 5,000 people and found the usual 43 genes that have shown up in prior studies, but they also found a new 18 genes associated with autism. 49 of the 61 genes are related to chromatin remodeling which means the genes work together functionally and the gene mutations increase autism’s behavioral aspects. The genes offer valuable information for developing treatment and medications to target the specifically and hopefully finding ways to better treat autism.

The more than 5,000 genome sequences are available to other scientists online and they hope to add another 2,000 sequences in the next month. The study was funded by Google and Autism Speaks, a nonprofit group that brings awareness to autism and is looking for better treatment and cures.
