In Oregon, Phylos Bioscience has sequenced the DNA of thousands of marijuana samples from around the world creating the largest genomic database of marijuana to date. Using all the marijuana data they’ve gathered thus far, Phylos Bioscience created a 3D interactive map representation called Galaxy which mimics a mesmerizing interstellar Star Wars scene.

Phylos Bioscience sends collection kits to breeders so they can legally mail in their samples, which Phylos then analyzes the DNA and sends breeders the results within 2 to 4 weeks. Phylos Bioscience’s goal is to help understand marijuana origins, relatives, and properties, and to keep varieties in the public domain and away from patent protection. At the same time, they hope the data will help breeders develop different and unique varieties of marijuana which they can then protect as their intellectual property.
