In the United Kingdom, genetics and brewing beer are converging. You can have your cheek swabbed to gather your DNA and a beer created just for you based on that genetic information. For £25,000, or about $31,704, London’s Meantime Brewery will do just that for you.
Meantime sends your cheek swab to 23andMe, a genetics company, so they can analyze your DNA preferences for sweetness and bitterness. The TAS2R38 gene is specifically looked at to determine your preference for sweet or bitter flavors. The results are then sent back to Meantime so they can work with you on a custom brew based on your DNA taste preferences. You also receive at least 2,000 pints of your personalized beer with your payment, a beer brewing course, and you can name your beer and work with Meantime to design your own label.
