Nailed it: Tiger Taylor develops bioplastic press-ons
In the UK, entrepreneur Tiger Taylor has launched biodegradable press-on nails after recognizing the need for more sustainable at-home manicure options during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Taylor told Marie Claire UK the UK beauty industry produces over 120,000 metric tons of nail and beauty-related trash. Acrylic nails in particular can take hundreds of years to degrade.
“I couldn’t get over the trail of little pieces of plastic that followed me everywhere I went,” Taylor said. “The fact that I would use them once and then throw them away, the flimsy packaging, the cheap quality of the nails and the toxic chemicals used to apply them; it all made me realize how toxic and wasteful the available options were.”
Dubbed Claws by Tiger Taylor, the nails are made of bioplastics and though they are safely consumed by microorganisms, they are also durable enough for every day wear.
“I’ve worn them in the sea, in saunas and steam rooms, even boxing, if they are cut down so my hands fit in my gloves!” Taylor said. “My longest set of Claws lasted for over two and a half weeks whilst on holiday in Ibiza, swimming in the sea, multiple showers and a few nights out…”
