Murata Manufacturing begins a hydrogen demonstration experiment at Yasu Plant

April 23, 2026 |

In Japan, Murata Manufacturing said it has now begun a demonstration experiment at Yasu Plant, its largest research and development base, to generate hydrogen, power a boiler with that hydrogen, and then use it for the air conditioning and other equipment in the buildings of the plant.

One of the key points of this initiative is that the firm has installed a water electrolysis device to generate hydrogen in-house, and is procuring the electric power to operate it from solar power generation. Using renewable energy means that the firm can produce green hydrogen that does not emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) even during the generation process.

“The system stores this green hydrogen in a hydrogen tank, powers a hydrogen boiler with it, and then uses it for the air conditioning in the buildings. We also expect to use the surplus in our research and development facilities. Adopting this structure has allowed us to create a mechanism that consistently emits no GHGs in the process from hydrogen generation to consumption,” Murata added.
