Methanol dual fuel aircraft transporter leaves Wuhan shipyard
In China, the Spirit of Mobile, a 169 meter vessel designed to transport large aircraft components using methanol dual fuel propulsion and six rotor sails, departed Wuchang Shipbuilding’s Shuangliu shipyard in Wuhan on Oct. 18, Hubei Daily reports.
Capable of speeds up to 17 knots, the transporter combines methanol fuel capability with wind assisted propulsion. Six cylindrical rotor sails, resembling smokestacks, are installed at the bow, stern and amidships, providing supplementary propulsion.
The vessel represents an application of alternative marine fuels and wind propulsion technology in specialized cargo shipping. Its departure followed completion of towing preparations supervised by Wuhan maritime authorities, who provided patrol escorts and drone surveillance to ensure safe passage through the Yangtze River.
