Lloyd’s Register grants approval in principle for flexible-fuel feeder vessel
In the United Kingdom, Safety4Sea reports Lloyd’s Register has granted Approval in Principle for a 3,370 TEU feeder vessel concept developed with Seaspan Corporation and German ship designer Technolog. The vessel launches on LNG and is built ammonia-ready, with conversion possible within four weeks during a scheduled dry dock call.
Technolog’s design achieves that flexibility through adaptable fuel tanks, double-walled piping, and a dual-fuel two-stroke engine that simplifies the transition between fuels without major reconstruction. Range runs to 9,000 nautical miles on LNG and 5,000 on marine gas oil or ammonia, with capacity for 480 refrigerated containers.
The approach allows shipowners to defer a long-term fuel commitment until infrastructure and market availability become clearer. Additional features include a forward wheelhouse to maximize cargo space, a 1 MW battery for peak shaving, a gate-rudder propulsion system, and an optional Flettner rotor sail.
