Johnson Matthey wins second green methanol plant license in China

April 30, 2026 |

In China, Guangdong Liquid Sunshine has selected Johnson Matthey as technology partner for a commercial-scale biomethanol plant in Tiandong County, Guangxi, designed to supply the growing maritime market for low-carbon fuel, marking JM’s second green methanol plant license win in the country.

The plant will use JM’s methanol synthesis technology to convert gasified biomass waste into biomethanol, with construction expected to begin later this year. Phase one targets annual production capacity of 75,000 tonnes. A planned second phase would capture excess carbon dioxide from the first plant and combine it with electrolytic hydrogen to produce e-methanol, expanding low-carbon methanol output without additional biomass feedstock and helping meet e-fuel mandates including those in Europe.

East China Engineering Science and Technology Co. will serve as engineering partner, and all three parties have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future projects. The plant is jointly developed with Tiandong County’s local government and China Coal Guangxi New Energy.
