Lloyd’s Register backs nuclear assisted car carrier
In Greece, Lloyd’s Register announced at Posidonia on June 2 that it is backing a nuclear assisted pure car and truck carrier concept developed with Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hyundai Glovis, G-Marine Service and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.
The joint development project examines how a small modular molten salt reactor could be installed on a large vehicle carrier. The study looked at reactor arrangement, segregation, shielding, cargo deck layout, vehicle capacity, stability, trim, propulsion configuration and power delivery. Lloyd’s Register led hazard identification and preliminary risk assessment work covering containment, onboard safety systems and operating limits for nuclear technology at sea. The partners received Approval in Principle for the concept during the exhibition.
