Korea Maritime Institute calls for legal framework to unlock marine ammonia
In South Korea, the Korea Maritime Institute has published research urging the government to build a legal and regulatory framework for green ammonia as a marine fuel, warning that the country’s shipping industry risks falling behind as international emissions rules tighten.
The institute highlighted that South Korea currently imports all of its ammonia and has no bunkering infrastructure or legal basis for supplying it as a ship fuel. It is calling for amendments to port transport legislation to establish that legal footing, alongside safety guidelines for ammonia leaks and a certification system for suppliers.
The report also recommends building port infrastructure, training specialist personnel, and creating cooperation frameworks between shipping companies and fuel suppliers to support technical trials.
The International Maritime Organization and the European Union’s emissions trading scheme are both pushing the shipping industry toward zero-carbon fuels, with green ammonia increasingly seen as a leading candidate.
