Korea Gas Safety Corporation builds hydrogen safety infrastructure
In South Korea, Maeil, Business Newspaper reported that the Korea Gas Safety Corporation is focusing its efforts on laying the foundation for the hydrogen economy by building a hydrogen safety infrastructure.
The government laid the foundation for the hydrogen economy by announcing the ‘Roadmap to Revitalize the Hydrogen Economy’ in 2019 and enacting the ‘Hydrogen Economy Promotion and Hydrogen Safety Management Act’ for the first time in the world in 2020. Since then, the ‘Hydrogen Safety Management Comprehensive Measures’ have been promoted to ensure the safety and industrial development of the hydrogen industry at the same time, and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation has been designated as an agency dedicated to hydrogen safety management under the Hydrogen Act and has played a key role in implementing the policy, according to the report.
As an agency dedicated to hydrogen safety management, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation has increased the level of safety management of hydrogen charging stations by introducing a safety impact assessment system that evaluates risks from the pre-construction stage of hydrogen charging stations and operating a more rigorous safety diagnosis system than regular inspections, the report said.
In addition, the “Hydrogen Product Test and Evaluation Center” was established and operated in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province to verify the safety of hydrogen cars and charging station parts, and the performance of internal pressure containers and charging station parts for hydrogen cars is evaluated through ultra-high pressure rupture test equipment and extreme temperature test facilities, it added.
