Japanese consortium begins full scale hydrogen ship engine test
In Japan, a consortium led by Japan Engine Corporation and Kawasaki Heavy Industries said on March 27, 2026 that it began running a hydrogen two-stroke marine engine in a factory test. The project is supported by NEDO with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines involved on the shipping side.
The partners said the full scale engine has reached more than 95 percent hydrogen at 100 percent load in mixed firing operation and confirmed stable running while verification tests continue.
The engine is scheduled to ship in January 2027 for installation on a 17,500 DWT hydrogen fueled multipurpose vessel that Onomichi Dockyard will design and build. Demonstration operation is planned to start in 2028 and run for three years, with safety evaluation continuing through design, construction and operation.
