Italy’s Dual-Fuel (H-Dual) project tests HVO and hydrogen/hydrobiomethane

May 19, 2026 |

In Italy, Ford Trucks International, Ford Trucks Italia, Ecomotive Solutions, Politecnico di Milano, LC3 Trasporti, SFBM, and Greenture (a Snam Group company) have launched the Dual-Fuel (H-Dual) project, an innovative solution based on the integration of diesel (HVO) and hydrogen/hydrobiomethane. The goal of this partnership is to develop and test the first hydrogen adaptation solution on a heavy-duty vehicle, with a view to commercializing a large-scale model and contributing to the construction of an environmentally and economically sustainable logistics system.

The program includes the launch and data collection from the first hydrogen refueling stations, starting with the Arquata Scrivia plant in the province of Alessandria; a crucial step in the planning and development of a localized refueling network across Italy. A key role in the entire development of the project has been entrusted to Ford Trucks Italy, selected from the various global divisions of the Blue Oval for its highly specialized resources and solid technical expertise, underscoring the Italian team’s pioneering role in the global roadmap towards sustainability.

Once H-Dual is fully operational, the first Diesel/H2 Dual-Fuel Truck will ensure that hydrogen contributes at least 30% of the fuel mix. It will then move on to testing advanced H2NG (Hydrogen + Biomethane) blends, thus offering high flexibility to existing vehicles.
