Ireland launches first national bioeconomy strategy

October 27, 2026 |

In Ireland, Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheál Martin has unveiled the country’s first National Bioeconomy Strategy as more than 1,500 delegates gathered in Dublin for the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2026.

Dubbed BioScale 2030, the plan aims to convert Ireland’s research capabilities and renewable biological resources into sustainable businesses, regional opportunities and new markets while supporting climate action and a circular economy.

Martin told attendees tht Ireland’s agricultural, forestry, marine and food sectors, combined with its research and industrial capabilities, provide a strong base for circular, climate-neutral growth. The strategy offers a national framework for reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuels while extending economic benefits to communities.

The summit, held October 20–21 at the Convention Centre Dublin, brought together policymakers, researchers, companies, investors and civil-society groups under the theme “Bioeconomy for Socio-economic Transformation and Climate Action.” Discussions focused on moving research toward commercial deployment through policy support, investment, partnerships and market development.
