India distills the rules for green ammonia

March 5, 2026 |

In India, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued the country’s first national definition of green ammonia under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, setting emissions limits and production criteria for the product.

The standard states that green ammonia must be produced using green hydrogen generated from renewable energy. Electricity used to produce that hydrogen may come directly from renewable sources or from renewable power stored in energy storage systems or banked with the grid under applicable regulations. The definition arrives as ammonia draws growing attention worldwide as a potential fuel for shipping and other hard-to-electrify industries.

To qualify, total non-biogenic greenhouse gas emissions associated with hydrogen production, ammonia synthesis, purification, compression and on-site storage must not exceed 0.38 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram of output, calculated as a rolling average over a 12-month period.

The ministry said it will issue a separate methodology governing how producers measure, report, monitor and verify emissions, including certification procedures for projects seeking to meet the standard.
