Brazil runs an inland cargo vessel on 100% biofuel
In Brazil, biofuels producer Be8 and shipping company Navegação Aliança carried out a trial using 100% Be8 BeVant biofuel aboard the vessel NM João Malmann on inland waterways in Rio Grande do Sul, testing the fuel on a working cargo route.
The vessel sailed more than 50 hours between Porto Alegre, Rio Grande, Pelotas and Guaíba while technical teams monitored performance and safety during the operation.
According to the companies, the test confirmed a 99.41% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional marine diesel.
The trial forms part of the Aliança 100% Biocombustível project, launched to evaluate biofuel use in inland navigation, a key freight corridor for the southern Brazilian state.
Engine specialists from Volvo Penta followed the operation and assessed how the biofuel performed during the voyage.
The companies said the results support further testing of biofuels in inland shipping as operators explore alternatives to conventional marine fuel.
