Hoku Energy’s “Daiichi Plant” selected as Japan’s first new-build 100% hydrogen power project
In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Hoku Energy K.K., the Japanese subsidiary of Hoku Infrastructure Limited announced that its “Daiichi Power Plant” has been selected under the 3rd Long-Term Decarbonized Power Source Auction (LTDA) conducted in fiscal year 2025.
This marks the first time that a new-build 100% hydrogen mono-firing thermal power project has been awarded under Japan’s national framework, according to the report.
The Daiichi Plant, located in Aomori Prefecture, is intended to address Japan’s growing electricity demand while contributing to the country’s GX strategy and carbon neutrality goals. Hoku Energy is committed to advancing the project in coexistence with local communities while complying with all applicable laws and regulations, the report added.
The project has been awarded a capacity of 106.6MW and is scheduled to commence operations between the early and middle part of 2030’s. The applicable support period under the LTDA framework is expected to extend for 40 years from the commencement of operations.
