Hainan offshore wind to power green methanol for ships
In China, Hainan Shenneng New Energy plans to produce 10,000 tons of green methanol annually in Yangpu, Danzhou, by the end of 2027, combining hydrogen made with offshore wind power and carbon dioxide from biomass to supply fuel for international ships at Yangpu Port.
The company has filed its green hydrogen energy demonstration project and plans to begin construction this year. Its associated offshore wind development connected a 603 MW first phase to the grid in 2025, with another 576 MW scheduled for operation by late 2026.
The project is designed to use more than 97% green electricity. Hydrogen storage, equipment combinations and wind forecasting will help maintain continuous production despite fluctuating wind output.
Shenneng also plans a technology demonstration platform to develop operating standards for larger projects, with potential replication at other Chinese ports.
