Grimaldi car carrier begins sea trials in China
In China, China Merchants Heavy Industry’s Haimen shipyard sent the 9,800 vehicle Grande Egitto down the Yangtze from Nantong for sea trials on August 30, with the Nantong Maritime Safety Administration escorting the vessel and managing traffic along the route. The ship is the seventh of 10 pure car and truck carriers being built for Italy’s Grimaldi Group and is the largest car carrier class the company currently has under construction or in operation.
The 220 meter vessel has 15 decks and capacity for 9,800 car equivalent units, up from 9,000 in the earlier design. Italian classification society RINA awarded it an “Ammonia Ready” notation, allowing for future conversion to ammonia propulsion.
The ship also carries a large lithium battery, solar panels and shore power connections, and uses air lubrication, an advanced propulsion system and an optimized hull to reduce energy use.
